"My Computer Is So Slow"

If your computer has slowed down this is a call to action:

With time your computer can become clogged up with viruses and malware. Left unchecked this will cause the machine to run slow. It is very important to have an up-to-date antivirus program, and to run your scans at least once a week. However, this is not the only cause of computers running slow.
Malware, third-party programs built by companies that monitor your surfing habits and gather private data from your machine, are equally potent and require an anti-malware program to be installed, updated, and scanned on a regular basis.

What is malware?

Malware is an abbreviation of ‘malicious software’. Examples of these include trojans, worms, viruses, and rootkits. Most people are aware that a suitable antivirus is required on their PC. Less known is that malware accounts for most of the attacks in recent years. As the name implies, the intention of this software is to damage your PC, take control, or steal your data.

Antivirus programmes are great at removing viruses, but most are not intended to target malware. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a secondary programme to target malware. E.g. Malwarebytes or CCleanerThese types of programmes can complement your antivirus, and provide more rounded protection.

How can I tell if my PC has been infected by malware?

-          Machine running slow
-          Multiple system crashes (Blue screen of death)
-          Files found to be moved in different folders
-          USB devices stop working
-          Antivirus programmes are deactivated or removed
-          Internet Explorer start-up takes longer that usual

Any one of these symptoms should be treated seriously. The best course of action is to run a full scan with your antivirus followed by a full scan with your antimalware programme. Running the scans should fix the problem, but do not hesitate in getting professional help if no solution is found. If your car was giving you problems you would prefer to get it fixed than drive it around with severe problems. Errors do not fix themselves, they only get worse. This can result in loss of data (photos, letters, etc), or your personal information could be used by a third-party to steal from you.

As a rule most people are not targeted directly. Malware is being written twice as fast as legitimate software. When posted onto the internet malware can infect your machine just by visiting a website or clicking on pop-ups. The combination of a good antivirus and antimalware programme provide a layering of protection that can prevent these scenarios.
